Enhanced Spam and Phishing Detection

Online scammers, sometimes referred to as ‘bad actors’, continually create new phishing attempts in hopes of evading our filters and reaching your inbox. Accidentally responding to these individuals can cause serious and significant harm to either the University or the individual. To combat the threat these bad actors present, FDU OIRT will be strengthening both our spam and phishing filters starting July 25, 2023.

Email filtering is a delicate balance. If the filter is too porous, dangerous phishing attempts will regularly reach our inboxes. However, if the filter is too stringent, we run the risk of the occasional ‘false positive’ in the form of legitimate emails being marked as spam. To mitigate this risk, we will begin sending each member of our community a daily email message. This email, which will come from quarantine@messaging.microsoft.com, will contain a digest of all messages marked as spam. When you receive the message, simply scroll through the quarantined messages, and click ‘Release’ if you believe that a message is legitimate and should be delivered to your inbox.
